Right on Time: Rapper/ Activist KRS-One

With all that is going on in the way of increase violence in Chicago, it should come as no surprise that I ran into Rapper/Legend/Activist, KRS-One recently at the SAX hotel in downtown Chicago.  We had just done a show together the night before but the next morning provided us the opportunity to talk in more detail and for Chris (KRS-One) to enlighten me on his recently revived but never forgotten “Stop the Violence” movement and he couldn’t be more on time.  In response to prevalent societal ills within the African American community KRS-One decided to revive his Stop the Violence movement and expand the audience from just Hip-Hop to entire communities beseeched with this problem.  He originally launched the movement nearly 20 years ago with the release of "Self Destruction," a single featuring prominent rappers of the day delivering verses about the effects of violence within the black community.  “It’s time that we updated it,” said KRS-One, “It’s the same problems just a different time…we’re still killing each other and it’s got to stop.”The 2008 Stop the Violence movement, has the backing and support of some of the Hip-Hop communities heaviest hitters; 50 Cent, Ludacris, Lil' Wayne, Busta Rhymes and Rick Ross, just to name.  Industry insiders like Martin Luther King III and other’s (like myself) say that the movement is a long time coming even though it’s only been 20 years since it’s initial wave.  "We are in a state of emergency--school shootings, nooses being hung from trees, domestic violence, gang violence, police brutality and war," KRS-One said, “Now is the time to revitalize the movement.  It’s over due.”

The Return of The Preacher’s Kid

Sade, Sting, Wu Tang Clan, Michael Jackson…these are a few artists on a short list, who are timeless. They can record an album, drop out of sight and resurface with a new project, eight years later to great acclaim and the open arms of their fans that have been gnawing at the bit for their music.  Well, it looks like one more of music’s heavy hitters is making his way back to the airwaves.  D’Angelo the musical genius in all of his soulful glory is back.  And just in time…I’ve worn a groove in my “Voodoo” CD, and in a day where, “Bust it Baby,” and
“Shawty is the Sh*t” is considered good soul music, he is right on time to heal what’s ailing music today.
Word has it that “D” is making progress on his first studio album since 2000, which will likely be released early next year via J Records. The label purchased D'Angelo's contract in 2005 from Virgin, which issued his first two studio albums.

For his as-yet-untitled J debut, D'Angelo has already collaborated with Raphael Saadiq and also plans to record with John Mayer, according to a source. A single may be out before the end of the year and I for one can’t wait!

The Super Sexy Jill Scott

from meager beginnings in Philadelphia, sultry singer Jill Scott jump-started her career by reading her own poetry and touring Canada in the Broadway musical, Rent. Following her Grammy-nominated debut album, "Who Is Jill Scott?," she chalked up time on the big screen (Tyler Perry’s Why did I get Married) and on the small screen in a recurring role on UPN's Girlfriends, released her Southmore and junior musical works called "Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds, Vol. 2," and The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3.   As if she has any spare time, Scott has also managed to throw her hat into the clothes designer ring….well not quite, it’s more like the under your clothes designer ring.  Partnering with Ashley Stewart stores, Scott's company J Heather Inc. has entered into an exclusive joint venture deal with Ashley Stewart Stores to introduce a new line of intimate apparel for the plus-size woman, titled “The Butterfly Collection by Jill Scott.”  The first piece will be called the Butterfly Bra, which makes the promise of, "No more back fat!"  Jill says that the line is personally inspired by her and fittingly uses her name and image.  “The whole concept was Jill’s vision,” say Ashley Stewart Executives.  The unsightly crease caused by the back strap on traditional bras was just one of many frustrations that drove Scott to approach the plus size chain with the goal of creating a bra line designed for well endowed, full figured ladies.
